Air Ride
If you’re interested in bicycles and have access to the internet, you’ll surely have seen the amazing frames by Herman Van Hulsteijn, which caused quite a sensation upon their launch. Herman is a Dutch designer whose focus has shifted to include frame design. It’s been said there’s not much improvement that can be made to the traditional diamond bicycle frame, so kudos to anyone who can marry an alternate layout with grace and style.
This is a prototype edition, owned by Hadrien Le Flanchec, who proudly announces it is the perfect vehicle for carousing the streets of his hometown, Paris. I’d imagine the Softride-esque top tube would absorb plenty of the vibrations caused by navigating the cobblestoned rues. Hadrien perfectly matched a pair of H+Son rims and Miche hubs, a San Marco Regal saddle, FSA cranks and MKS pedals, retaining the decorative aesthetic. Hadrien is running a fixed 46×16 gear ratio, but a Van Hulsteijn frame can be configured with a two-speed Sturmey Archer hub, or a derailleur.

Adventure with style
Salsa’s Fargo Ti is strategically engineered towards comfortable, long distance, off-road touring. It’s true that comfortable, long distance, off-road touring is perfectly possible on a lot of bikes, when one is halfway along Canada’s Great Divide Trail or some other God-forsaken section of wilderness, it can be a small comfort to know the machine you’re riding is built for the job.
Adam Macbeth has a bead on the Great Divide Trail, but until he gets himself over there, he’s content to explore as much of Australia as he can manage, and the Fargo is a fine complement to that journey. A fine complement to the Fargo is a complete suite of luggage from Alaska’s Revelate Designs. Their catalog consists of frame bags, handlebar and seat bags that enable a complete bikepacking adventure. Each bag is designed to maximize the available space within a bike, without resorting to racks and trailers–an ideal solution for bikers who wish to ride without the swaying motion of a fully-laden set of panniers or whose journey simply won’t allow it.
The transmission consists of SRAM XO Twisties and rear mech with an XT mech in the front, while the brakes are Avid BB7 discs with old-school XTR levers. The 29er wheel set is laced to Chris KING pewter hubs, with matching bottom bracket and headset. The Profile T2 aero bars are utilized “where there’s a tonne of open, unsealed road and fire trail” (I use mine for additional equipment like tents and rain gear).

Dualie
US-based design firm AUTUM created a stir on Cycle EXIF with their Minion bicycle, the limited run of which rapidly sold out. Their exclusive range of men’s accessories has been complemented again with another bike, the Epitaph, a dark and luxurious beast with the rolling comfort of a Chesterfield lounge.
Like the Minion, the frame is custom built in the US, suspended with triple-clamp forks and powered by a single speed drivetrain consisting of 4130 Chromoly three-piece cranks, hauled up by a coaster brake in the rear. The Epitaph features a double rim system with dual tires on the front and rear, which would make for an interesting riding experience. But considering the extent of it’s riding will be short trips between the loft apartment, studio office, deli and clandestine rendezvous, dubious ride integrity will be worth it for the conversation point alone. The ‘turn and tuck’ style saddle and frame inserts are hand crafted from fastidiously selected aged leather, with matching grips. A limited run of 12 assures exclusivity, with laser engraved Roman numerals denoting which of the 12 one managed to secure.

Budnitz BMX for adults
You might not recognize the name of Paul Budnitz, but you may be more familiar with his incredibly popular designer toy, apparel and lifestyle label, Kidrobot. Since 2002, Paul has been collaborating with some of the world’s most talented artists to produce a wide range of characters such as Dunny, Munny and a slew of others—some of whom have been selected by New York’s Museum Of Modern Art for their permanent collection. Not content with generating a worldwide cult of toys, Paul is now venturing into the realm of the custom bicycle.
The range already consists of two models, No. 1 and No. 2, the latter of which is featured here. Both frames are titanium, and equipped with a Gates carbon belt drive and a top-shelf selection of Chris King, Phil Wood and Paul Components. No. 2 sports a 26″ rear wheel and a 29″ on the front, and is touted as a ‘BMX bike for adults’, which is enough for me. Citing Aston Martins and 80s-era Maseratis as inspiration, the sinewy lines of Budnitz Bikes certainly cut dashing figures. You’ll have to get in the queue if you like the look of them, however. The first production run sold out immediately, with the next expected to be ready by Fall 2011. More information on the Budnitz Bicycles website.
